About extract
extract is an independent guide to specialty coffee shops: cafés that serve carefully sourced, freshly roasted coffee, usually with filter coffee alongside espresso. It covers 5,461 cafés in 1,270 cities across 43 countries.
How cafés get listed
Our list started from public specialty-coffee guides. Each café is matched to its Google Maps listing for its location, opening hours, rating and photos. When a café is marked as permanently closed, it leaves our lists.
What the information means
- Ratings are Google ratings out of 5. We show them as they are and don't adjust them.
- Amenities such as Wi-Fi, laptops welcome, filter coffee or outdoor seating come from each café's listing. They can change, so check with the café when it matters.
- Opening hours come from Google Maps. Holidays and special events aren't always reflected.
- Short descriptions are summaries written with the help of AI from the facts above, so they only describe what the data says.
How we pick cafés for a city
City pages list every café we know in that city, best rated first. "Our picks" narrows this down to cafés rated 4.6 or higher on Google, with award winners first and no more than three picks in the same area, so the selection covers the whole city. Picks are listed by area, not ranked: a rating alone doesn't say whether it comes from a dozen reviews or thousands. We leave out cafés whose Google listing doesn't look like the café itself, so every rating shown belongs to the café.
Each pick says what it is good for (working, breakfast, sitting outside, dogs…), what coffee it serves, whether it roasts its own beans and when it opens. All of it comes from the café's listing, not from a paid placement.
Pages for a topic, such as work-friendly cafés or a Paris arrondissement, only exist where people actually search for them and where we list at least six matching cafés.
